As
many new mothers do, I struggled with breastfeeding early
on. My first child, Megan, and I had a difficult time figuring
each other out. With extra encouragement and a wonderful
lactation consultant, I found the will to continue. With
some extra effort, we were soon nursing with ease. However,
my slumbering baby soon turned into a curious, wide-eyed
explorer. Megan, who used to nurse contentedly for what
seemed liked hours, was now interested in everything but
eating! The idea of a "nursing necklace" was exactly
what I needed.
I created our first 'Mommy & Megan Necklace' three years
ago. I used my background in early childhood and sensory/tactile
development to create our first necklace. Over the course
of our two year nursing relationship, I watched Megan interact
with our necklaces. She challenged me to continually improve
them and
find ways to make them more engaging and stimulating. During
those two years, I had no breastfeeding challenge greater
than meeting her curious needs while nursing. She craved
sensory input and she put my skills to the test!
Megan
is now four and you may think she has left behind her
old "nursing necklaces". However, her original
necklaces have turned into special keepsakes for us. As
a preschooler, she also enjoys using them for dress-up, putting
them on her dolls, and using them for learning. I often
giggle as I watch her play and think about how one little
necklace started this all (we still have the first one)!
In 2007, I welcomed my second child into the word,
Evan. We're currently enjoying a very 'busy' nursing relationship and he's definitely made me glad I do what I do. At a year and a half, he is still very distractible and as you would suspect, I always have an arsenal of nursing necklaces on hand for him.
This opportunity not only cured my bruises from my pinching
baby, but it has also allowed me work from home full-time
(WAHM), while staying at home with my daughter and son.
I am a certified teacher with a B.S. in Early Childhood.
I have had a variety of experiences working with different
ages and stage of child development including children with
special needs (such as sensory disorders), teaching toddlers,
preschoolers, and the early elementary grade levels.
